The Triangle's best bartender, as decided by the users of share.triangle.com, is Johnny Berry, who serves cocktails at Bogart's American Grill in Raleigh. He received 826 votes.
Berry, 31, has been a bartender there since the restaurant opened in 2001. In fact, he's the only employee who remains on staff from when the restaurant opened.
This is what his fans had to say online: "Johnny is the fantabuloust bartender in all the land! I trust no one else with my tasty beverages." And "Walking encyclopedia of knowledge. He is a master barkeep."
Berry, who grew up around Kernersville and Winston-Salem, has lived and worked in the Triangle for more than a decade. Before moving behind the bar, he worked in the kitchen, including at the esteemed Magnolia Grill in Durham. Although he cooked elsewhere for several years before working for the James Beard-award winning chef Ben Barker, Berry says, "I learned to cook at Magnolia Grill."
Just like in the kitchen, Berry likes the pace of his work behind the bar. "I like the action of it -- the fact that I'm constantly moving. ... I don't really sit still well," he explains.
Berry believes his culinary background helps him develop cocktail flavors. One drink he is enamored with right now: a martini made with gin infused with cantaloupe and honeydew. Berry says the melon subdues the gin's pine-flavor from the juniper berries and adds a subtle sweetness. The cocktail is available at Bogart's American Grill.
As the winner, Berry will receive a bottle of his favorite liquor.
