A HISTORY OF TROUBLES
BROUGHTON HOSPITAL: The federal government cut off payments to the state hospital in Morganton in August because of questionable care. One patient died after staff members held him to the floor. Another patient who was supposed to be closely monitored fell and suffered a serious head injury. Hospital administrators then failed to report four patient deaths to the proper authorities.
CHERRY HOSPITAL: Cherry was threatened in September with losing its federal payments because of problems with a patient escape, a patient being improperly restrained and a delay in getting needed oxygen to a patient being admitted. Administrators at the facility came up with an improvement plan and continued to get federal money.
DOROTHEA DIX HOSPITAL: A federal review at the Raleigh mental hospital in November determined nurses working there had lapsed professional licenses.
JOHN UMSTEAD HOSPITAL: Federal officials threatened in November to cut off insurance payments to the Butner hospital for failures to prevent the repeated abuse of patients and staff.
