CARY - The Carolina RailHawks of the USL defeated the Brooklyn Knights of the Premiere Development League 1-0 to kick off the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Carolina will host the winner of the match between Real Maryland Monarchs and the NY Pancyprian Freedoms on June 24.

RailHawks midfielder Kupono Low launched a free kick into the lower left corner of the net in the 85th minute for the game's lone goal.

Carolina goalie Chris McClellan posted a shutout on 11 saves, 10 coming in the second period.

Playing on an uncomfortably hot evening, neither team was able to establish much offensive rhythm, resulting in a 0-0 deadlock at the end of the first period. Only 11 combined shots were taken in the period.

The tournament matches teams from amateur and professional soccer leagues, including the MLS, USL First and Second Divisions, and the Premiere Development League.

The RailHawks hope to improve on their semifinals finish of last season. Carolina lost to Major League Soccer club and eventual champion New England Revolution 2-1.

Up next for the RailHawks is a trip to Puerto Rico to take on the Puerto Rican Islanders on Thursday.

Carolina plays in Miami on Saturday.
