Finding a licensed home inspector

A recommendation from a friend or colleague is one of the best ways to find a home inspector you can trust.

Visit the N.C. Licensed Home Inspector Association Web site at www.nclhia.com to find a list of inspectors in your area. If you're using a real estate agent to buy your home, inspectors say, don't feel pressured to use an inspector recommended by your agent.

Inspectors strongly encourage clients to join them on the inspection, which the seller should allow. The inspector might explain that something you spot isn't a serious problem.

Before you hire an inspector, check his or her certifications, education and background. If you're worried about a specific aspect of the home, consider finding someone who is also a specialist in that field, such as an inspector who is an architect, a structural engineer or a chimney sweep.
