"Psyche's Dance with Death," by Lindsay Abromaitis-Smith: A mask and bunraku retelling of the Psyche tale from Greek mythology, created by New York puppeteer Abromaitis-Smith. Wednesday, 7 p.m., ArtsCenter, Carrboro, and Sept. 2, 9 p.m. at Historic Playmakers Theater.

"The Hardest Question Ever," by Pittsburgh's Indicator Species: a shadow puppet show featuring intense stories compiled by teachers, artists and activists who work with prisoners, including a rapist and murderer. Sept. 1, 7 p.m. at Historic Playmakers Theater, UNC-Chapel Hill.

"K…the Kollwitz," by Stranger Theater of Toronto, Canada: uses toy theater and shadow projections to illuminate the life and work of 20th century German Expressionist artist Kollwitz. Thursday, 7 p.m. at ArtsCenter; Sept. 2, 9 p.m., Historic PlayMakers Theater.

"Star Search," by Philadelphia's The Skekses: whimsical tale that imagines what might happen if you had a star named after you and aliens from the star came to visit you. This family-friendly comedy precedes Paperhand's Forest performance Sept. 1, at 6:30 p.m. and is also included in the Sept. 2 show at 9 p.m. at Historic Playmakers Theater.

"From My Porch," by Philadelphia-based Legends Walk the Streets, follows the history of Philadelphia's urban development and its racial implications from the 1800s to the present. Thursday, 7 p.m. ArtsCenter, Carrboro and Sept. 1, 9 p.m. at Historic Playmakers Theater.
