Underneath the CD cover, find a man of many aliases

"King Britt Presents Sister Gertrude Morgan" is a rare find, not only because it has Britt re-styling the music of a long-gone missionary, but because it's one of the few King Britt releases where the man assumes his own identity. Like so many contemporary beat junkies (Madlib, MF Doom, Kool Keith), Britt has created a whole rogues' gallery of multiple musical personalities. Here are some that we know about:

Sylk 130

The most well-known of Britt's alter-egos, Sylk is Britt's retro side. The first Sylk album, 1997's "When the Funk Hits the Fan," has him collaborating with fellow Philly folk like Lady Alma Horton and James Poyser for this '70s-style "emotion picture soundtrack." His 2001 sophomore album, "Re-Members Only," has an '80s vibe, with appearances from Reagan-era Britpop royalty Allison Moyet & Martin Fry and the late, great Grover Washington Jr. Britt says another Sylk 130 album is in the works.

Firefly

Back when he was running his own label, Ovum Recordings, Britt released the 12-inch vinyl single "Supernatural" under this handle, one of his first. The 1994 acid-house number, featuring Philly poetess Ursula Rucker on vocals, has been re-pressed and remixed on various compilations over the years.

Oba Funke

This alias is the most enigmatic, considering that Britt built him up as an actual, flesh-and-blood person, referring to Funke as a "Nigerian-born producer" in several online bios. But Britt and Funke are one and the same, coming together for the Afrotech album "CosmoAfrique" in 2002.

Scuba

Britt says he came up with this one while tripping on mushrooms, which opened his mind and gave him the inspiration to come up with this dreamy, deep-house character. (He says the effect "never wore off to this day.") Although he has released only one album (2002's "Hidden Treasures") under this moniker, he still records in Scuba mode, like the track "Love For You" on Britt's upcoming "Deep & Sexy 4."

The Nova Dream Sequence

This latest Britt incarnation continues in the same trippy vein as Scuba, but even more aggressive and befuddling in the beat department. "Interpretation," the album that was released last year, contains 15 tracks -- none of them are titled (they're all numbered "dreams") -- that can be best described as "hardcore ambient."
