Marine Lance Cpl. Jeffery A. Bishop, 23, of Dickson, Tenn., died from unspecified wounds suffered during a combat operation in Anbar Province west of Baghdad.

Pfc. Michael Slater, 19, from Scott Depot, W. Va., a heavy vehicle driver, was killed when his truck overturned at Camp Taji about 18 miles northwest of central Baghdad.

Bishop was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, and Slater was with the 82nd Airborne Division's 407th Brigade Support Battalion.

Members of Slater's family asked through the 82nd Airborne that journalists not contact them. The 407th's Rear Detachment Commander, Capt. Valora Vomastic, called him a dedicated soldier and said he was respected by others in the unit.

Slater joined the Army in July 2006, according to a news release from the 82nd Airborne. He came to the 82nd in February 2007. His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist's Badge.

Slater is survived by his father, Charles Slater; his mother, Patricia Slater; and his sister, Shannon Slater, all of Scott Depot, W. Va., according to the news release from the division.

A woman who answered the phone at the home of Bishop's parents declined to be interviewed.

Bishop joined the Marine Corps on Sept. 8, 2003, and was trained as a machine gunner, said Master Gunnery Sgt. Constance Heinz, a spokeswoman for the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune. He joined his unit in March 2004.

His decorations include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
