FORT BRAGG -- A soldier based at Fort Bragg has been killed in Iraq, the Defense Department said Wednesday.

Sgt. Joseph W. Perry, 23, of Alpine, Calif., died Monday in Muhallah, Iraq, when his mounted patrol came in contact with enemy forces using small-arms fire during combat operations, the military said.

Perry entered the military in August 2002 and deployed to Iraq in December 2005.

He was assigned to the 21st Military Police Company, 16th Military Police Brigade, 18th Airborne Corps. Perry was previously based in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where he was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 43rd Adjutant General Battalion and Company B, 795th Military Police Battalion.

Perry's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with V for Valor Device.

A memorial service for Perry will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Bragg Main Post Chapel.
