Regarding your April 5 story "Lot of talk, little action on Dix site":
Our position is that the Dix Hospital property in Raleigh continues to function as it is now while park improvements are designed. When the state Department of Health and Human Resources decides that the buildings are no longer useful to them, we propose they be transferred for park purposes. An undetermined number of the buildings that are not on the National Historic Register may be removed.
Friends of Dorothea Dix Park intentionally did not propose a specific park plan because we feel that world-class park designers should design the precious 306 acres. That takes time and money. After the land is designated a park, professionals should be given time to engage the public in the planning and propose the best park plan. Additionally, in order to raise funds for world-class park designers, first the land must be designated as a park.
