Contrary to the findings of neutral observers, the Israelis blamed Hamas for recent Palestinian civilian deaths and refuse to take responsibility. Some but not all of this has been casually reported on the back pages of your paper.

After considerable provocation, now it appears that the Palestinian resistance has captured an Israeli soldier during one of their operations. All of a sudden we have an international crisis and the incident is on your front page ("Israel readies attack," June 27). As usual, the context behind the report is rather one-sided. For example, no outrage is expressed that overwhelming mechanized air and ground fire will be brought to bear on a civilian population by a well-equipped army.

In pro forma fashion the Bush administration has called for restraint while continuing to arm the Israelis, starve the Palestinians and hope to win the minds and hearts of the Islamic world. I don't believe either this farcical behavior or the media coverage will do it. What is worse, this is unlikely to change, so long as the public continues to get biased reporting on this issue.
