I applaud your June 25 editorial "First step on forests," with praise for Gov. Mike Easley's efforts to protect roadless areas in North Carolina's national forests. The governor reflected the feelings of many when he said "North Carolina's roadless areas are unique places of unspoiled wilderness and beauty, which we value even more highly because of the intense development pressures facing our state."
As you explained, the protection of existing areas in our national forests is an important first step in protecting native wildlife and beauty. A critical next step is to provide needed funding for protection of additional lands, including drinking water sources, fish and wildlife habitat and working farms and forests.
Land for Tomorrow, a partnership of more than 220 organizations, has a proposal before the General Assembly to do just that. If approved, the legislation would put a referendum on the November ballot so the public can vote to provide $1 billion in land and water conservation bonds.
I urge Easley to take the next step in protecting North Carolina's forests by encouraging legislators to give the public a chance to vote for the land and water conservation bonds in November.
