Congratulations to the N.C. Museum of Art for its Claude Monet exhibition, and thanks to The N&O for its extensive coverage. The exhibition ought to bring well-earned recognition to Raleigh and North Carolina.
However, Raleigh not only imports art, it exports as well. On Sept. 26, 40 dancers and staff of Carolina Ballet left Raleigh for a seven-city, 10-performance tour of China, only the second American ballet company to tour there. The tour includes Beijing and Shanghai, and more than 30,000 people are expected to attend the performances. The company is performing Artistic Director Robert Weiss' brilliant new choreography of "Swan Lake," created and premiered right here in Raleigh. It is only one of more than 40 new works created in Raleigh over the nine-year life of Carolina Ballet. In fact, over those nine years, more new work was created in Raleigh than anywhere else in the country, except New York City.
Those readers who haven't yet seen or don't yet support North Carolina's great arts institutions, get aboard and find out for yourself what the rest of the world is discovering about the quality of the arts in our city and state. You'll be proud you did!
