CHAPEL HILL - Democrat Bernadette Pelissier will face Republican Kevin Wolff for an at-large Orange County Board of Commissioners seat in November, while the inaugural District 2 race will go to a June 24 runoff.

Steve Yuhasz, a Hillsborough surveyor, had secured nearly 37 percent of the vote with all 16 precincts reporting in the newly created district.

But that was just short of the 40 percent plurality he needed to stave off a runoff against Efland retiree Leo Allison, who received 28 percent of the vote in the four-way race. Allison said he would request the runoff.

Pelissier, 57, a longtime member of the Orange Water and Sewer Authority, member of the Sierra Club and other civic groups, ran on a smart growth platform focused on protecting the environment and natural resources such as the water supply.

"I've shown I really cared about the county," she said amid a celebration with family and friends Tuesday night.

"That's what I'll continue to do in the general election, to show to the voters I care."

Pelissier will face Wolff, of Chapel Hill, who has run unsuccessfully for Chapel Hill mayor.

Yuhasz, 57, focused his campaign on the need to recruit businesses and industries to the unincorporated parts of the county.

"We need to do that to enhance our tax base," he said Tuesday evening. "I think a number of the commissioners already are working hard to do that, and I'm hopeful we can continue to do that in the future."

Allison, 75, said he hoped to get many of the votes garnered by Luther Brooks and Tommy McNeill, the two other District 2 candidates. He said he agreed with Yuhasz about the need to attract more businesses and industries to the county.

"I don't know what the differences are, to be honest with you," Allison said.

"But I just think the way the vote was split, in a runoff I think I'll get most of those votes."
