Finally someone made the most important point regarding the decision on what is to become of the Dorothea Dix campus. Charles H. Montgomery, in his Feb. 12 Point of View article, wrote that "Raleigh requires a vision for the future with a long-term perspective."

To determine this, the question becomes what will Raleigh, and by extension the state, have as its greatest need in 50 or 100 years? With the state and especially its Capital City slated to grow beyond comprehension, open space is the answer.

To accomplish this, our mayor, the Dix Study Commission and legislators need to take a principled stand and be courageous enough to fight to set aside the entire 306 acres of the Dix property as a significant central park.

More A Opinion

Any other solution or compromise will be a weak, self-serving cop-out that discounts the needs of our children, our grandchildren and their fellow citizens.
