Don Buckner of Roxboro will serve in the volunteer post of district governor for Rotary International for 2008-2009. As governor, he will coordinate the community, international, and vocational service projects of the 42 Rotary clubs in District 7710 that spans the north-central portion of North Carolina. "We will continue with the programs that are the backbone of Rotary: health, hunger, water and literacy and a new initiative -- child mortality," Buckner said at a June 24 ceremony at the Durham Civic Center. "We have pockets of poverty, health and hunger issues, impure water and rampant illiteracy in every town, city and county we live in." Buckner, a native of Mebane, is a graduate of Elon University with degrees in history and management. He is owner and president of Management Recruiters International of Person County.

RAVENSCROFT SENIOR TO BE AT DUKE YOUTH ACADEMY

Catherine Uffman, a rising senior at Ravenscroft School, will attend the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation July 13-26 at Duke University in Durham. Duke Divinity School sponsors the academy, supported by The Lilly Endowment Inc. This year 59 students from 19 states will attend the academy. Callie, the daughter of Craig and Claudia Uffman, attends St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
