CHAPEL HILL - The sponsor of Elizabeth Edwards' speaking engagement in Detroit this week says Edwards has canceled her appearance to care for her mother.

Metro Parent magazine said Edwards canceled the engagement scheduled for Wednesday. It also said in a news release that Edwards has canceled all of her October engagements to care for her gravely ill mother.

A representative at Edwards' speaker agency, the Harry Walker Agency in New York City, did not return messages Sunday seeking comment. The magazine said the tickets would be honored for a new date, expected to be announced within two weeks.

Edwards has incurable breast cancer. She recently began speaking publicly following the revelation this summer that her husband, former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, had an extramarital affair.
