It is with bittersweet emotions that I am writing to you today. The article on caring for aging parents on June 1 especially touched me.

The picture of the hands was actually my mother, Doris Hockaday and her hospice volunteer, Lane Kaplan, which was taken in August 2006.

Seeing the picture brought a smile to my heart and tears to my eyes. It was like a sweet, golden nugget that Mom sent down from heaven. There was an article in the paper about the two of them on Aug. 1, 2006.

My mother passed away on Aug. 24, 2006, at my home, in her yellow room, which she said reminded her of her favorite yellow roses. She had been diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis several years earlier and over time it gradually took its toll.

Words cannot describe what a privilege and honor it was for me to be able to take care of her during the last several months of her life. This warm weather brings so much of it back, and I really do not know what I would have done without Lane and Wake County Hospice.

I was also blessed with a very loving and unselfish husband, Theo, who truly loved my mother. We all made sacrifices and stepped out on faith to make it all work, including me leaving my regular job so that I could be at home.

It is often the hardest times in our life that are the most rewarding, and I will forever cherish her wonderful memories.
