Don't trust the NRC

Your Dec. 15 editorial, "Nuclear charges" was disappointingly far from a forthright, courageous stand on an important issue. It's been known for some time that there are serious shortcomings in security at Progress Energy's Shearon Harris nuclear plant. Now that N.C. WARN has detailed its investigations revealing security problems, it seems that your position is that we should rely on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission "to determine whether the allegations have any substance."

Don't I recall that earlier reports of lax security have been pretty much ignored? I urge The N&O to examine the extent to which the NRC fulfills its obligation to be a staunch independent protector of the public's safety, as opposed to a relatively weak supporter of corporate profits.

And if I thought your comment that NC WARN "clearly has an agenda" used that word in its meaning of "a series of things to be done" I'd feel better than I do being certain that you intended it to disparage the group's motives. Perhaps you could discuss Progress Energy's "agenda" or the NRC's "agenda."
