If you're an old-school comic strip fan, we've got good news for you -- none of your favorites are going anywhere. "For Better or For Worse," "Peanuts," "Shoe" -- they're all staying in The News & Observer.

But don't fret if you're a modern-comics connoisseur who has been craving something different. We'll also be adding new faces, including "Tundra," "F-Minus," "Candorville" and "Sherman's Lagoon."

We're even bringing back three old favorites -- "Cathy," "Hagar the Horrible" and "Drabble."

Your comics questions answered

Why can't we run "Calvin & Hobbes" reruns? Why couldn't readers vote against "Lio"? Why are the Sunday comics different from the daily ones? We answer these and other questions on PAGE 3E.

The comics vote

Even though we aren't dropping anything, it's fun to see how you voted. "For Better or For Worse," "Peanuts" and "Shoe" are loved, while the hate is high for "Watch Your Head," "Sylvia" and "Mallard Fillmore."

How to read this

The five bars under each comic show ratings from 1 ("Love it! One of my favorites!" in pink) to 5 ("Hate it! Please drop it!" in blue).

Happy New Year, comics fans!

Starting Jan. 14, we'll be adding nine strips, without taking any current comics away. In addition to those mentioned above, we'll also bring in "Mallard Fillmore" and "Mother Goose and Grimm." Of the guest comics that were up for a vote, only "Agnes," which received lukewarm support, won't be joining our lineup.

Adding comics wasn't our original plan when we conducted a reader comics poll last month. We thought we might add three strips and lose three. But then we saw the overwhelming response to the survey -- 7,910 votes online and by paper ballot.

You folks care -- and care deeply -- about your comics. So, we thought, why not just add more?

To pull this off, we'll be moving the crossword, Cryptoquote, Jumble, horoscope and bridge column to page 2E. Don't worry, we're not making any other changes to these features. And all 2E features will continue in the daily or Sunday N&O.

We'll also be rearranging the comics pages into four areas -- old favorites, new strips, family-oriented comics and controversial ones.

That will make it easier for you to find exactly what appeals to you. Our goal is to have something for everyone.

It starts Jan. 14. Enjoy!
