RALEIGH -- Mayor Charles Meeker met for 90 minutes Tuesday with four Raleigh sanitation workers and two union representatives in an attempt to resolve labor strife in the city's Department of Solid Waste Services.
Meeker said 10 or 12 issues remain to be hashed out. One worker with UE 150, John Cutler, spoke briefly, calling the meeting a success. No workers or union leaders would comment further.
The meeting was held behind closed doors in Meeker's office. One nonunion sanitation worker was asked to leave. The worker, who gave his first name as Tony, said the union represents slightly more than half of the city's sanitation workers.
"The leaders objected to his being there," Meeker said. "I didn't get his name and will try to contact him."
Meeker said he and workers agreed that the City Council should approve a recommendation to give full-time status to temporary workers at its meeting Tuesday. He added that he and union members will meet again Thursday of next week.
Workers have complained about long hours without compensation. Meeker said Raleigh will investigate how other cities handle overtime.
