Sewage leaks into creek again

closeDURHAM -- A joint in a city sewer main cracked Monday morning, spilling an estimated 2,000 gallons of raw sewage into Goose Creek.
A media release said the leak, which occurred behind a house at 103 S. Maple St. on the city's east side, was caused by grease and rags that had clogged the sewer line. The leaking sewage was contained and pumped back into the system, the release said.
The area is being cleaned and disinfected, though officials said the there were "no immediately visible adverse environmental impacts" resulting from the spill.

The spill is the second this month to affect Goose Creek. On Dec. 4, the city reported a 14,400-gallon sewage spill near Juniper Street.
