ENDING SEASON ON HIGH NOTE: Carolina's Chris Volstad outdueled Tennessee's Jeff Samardzija as the Mudcats closed the 2007 season with a victory Monday over the Smokies at Five County Stadium in Zebulon.

Volstad (4-2) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and a walk, fanning two in five innings for his 12th overall win this season. The right-hander went 8-9 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 outings at Class A Advanced Jupiter (Fla.). Rich Dorman pitched the ninth for his first save.

Eric Riggs and Jai Miller hit RBI singles in the first, and Chase Lambin hit a leadoff homer in the third. Miller followed with an RBI double to give the Mudcats (32-38) a 4-2 edge. Samardzija (3-3), a former Notre Dame wide receiver, was reached for four runs on eight hits and a walk with two strikeouts over four innings for his third straight loss.

Kyle Reynolds and Jemel Spearman drove in runs in the first before Tyler Colvin scored on a grounder in the fifth for the playoff-bound Smokies (37-33).
