Pirates sweep past UAB

East Carolina wins ninth straight

Broc Sutton, Stephen Batts and Dustin Harrington homered for East Carolina in the second game as the Pirates edged UAB 8-7 to sweep a baseball doubleheader against the Blazers on Saturday in Greenville.

The Pirates (36-13, 11-7 C-USA) won the opener 17-1 and swept the three-game weekend series against UAB (19-27, 4-14).

East Carolina extended its winning streak to nine games and won for the 13 straight time at home.

In the second game, East Carolina took a 6-1 lead but had to hold on for the victory as UAB scored four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Two eight-inning ECU runs proved pivotal. Sutton led off the Pirates' eighth with a home run and Batts scored on a bases-loaded walk to give ECU an 8-5 lead.

Stihl Sowers came on in the ninth to get the final two outs and earn his first save.

T.J. Hose (5-4) was the winner in the second game, giving up one run in 5 2/3 innings. He surrendered five hits, walked two and struck out six.

In the opener, Corey Kemp had a career game with four hits, five RBIs and four runs scored, including his 14th home run of the season.

The Pirates hit five homers in the first game, getting two from Harrison Eldridge (three RBIs), and one each from Kemp, Jamie Ray and Ryan Wood.

HIGH POINT 9, N.C. STATE 6: Randy Schwartz drove a one-out, bases-loaded double off the center-field wall to highlight a ninth-inning rally that lifted High Point over 18th-ranked N.C. State at Doak Field.

Schwartz's drive off Wolfpack closer Jimmy Gillheeney came after N.C. State had overcome a 6-0 deficit to tie the score at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh. The Panthers, who won for the fifth time in seven games and the 14th time in their last 20 games, rallied in the ninth to improve to 18-24. The Wolfpack had its four-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the fifth time in its last 22 games to fall to 31-14.

Jeremy Synan went 3-for-4 to lead N.C. State's offense, which produced 14 hits. Marcus Jones, Ryan Pond and Dallas Poulk had two hits each for the Pack.

ELON 7, CAMPBELL 1: Bennett Davis and Chase Austin homered for the host Phoenix (35-16) as Elon rolled past Campbell (17-30).

Elon's Jesse Lewter (4-2) worked seven strong innings for the win, giving up six hits and one run while walking one and striking out eight.

Campbell's Ryan Hamme (0-3) took the loss, pitching 4 1/3 innings and giving up seven runs.

Hamme and Ellis Lowe had two hits each to lead Campbell's eight-hit attack.

Elon finished with 13 hits.
