South Carolina men's basketball player Devan Downey has been charged with simple assault.University spokesman Russ McKinney says the charge stemmed from an argument Downey had with another student on campus last week.McKinney says the student decided to seek charges Monday after asking police not to press charges when they initially investigated the incident.Athletic department spokesman Steve Fink says Downey has been suspended from the team per a school policy to immediately suspend any athlete who is arrested.The sophomore guard led the team with 18.4 points last season and started every game.He was at the Richland County jail Monday night. It wasn't immediately clear if he has an attorney.MORE BASKETBALLKELLOGG ADDS TO UMASS STAFF: New UMass head basketball coach Derek Kellogg has named four assistants, including former Pepperdine coach Vance Walberg, and holdover Adam Ginsburg, who has been an assistant coach for the Minutemen the past three seasons.Two former assistants at Memphis, where Kellogg spent eight years before taking the UMass job last month, also were appointed to his staff on Monday. Andy Allison will be director of basketball operations and Shyrone Chatman will be director of player personnel.Kellogg, a former UMass player, replaces Travis Ford, who was hired at Oklahoma State.Walberg resigned from Pepperdine for personal reasons in January.PENNELL JOINS RIVAL: Arizona hired Russ Pennell as an assistant basketball coach on Monday.The former Arizona State assistant coach and radio analyst will join Lute Olson's staff after spending the last two seasons running a basketball academy in the Phoenix area.He replaces Kevin O'Neill, who left the program after serving as interim coach during Olson's leave of absence last season.Pennell was part of Rob Evans' staff in Tempe from 1998-2006, and worked for Evans at Mississippi. Earlier, he served on Eddie Sutton's Oklahoma State staff.Olson has one opening left after Miles Simon's contract was not renewed last week.WOMEN'S LACROSSENCAA FIELD SET: Four Atlantic Coast Conference teams received bids on Monday to the 16-team women's lacrosse NCAA tournament field.Maryland was seeded third and Virginia fourth.Virginia (14-30) will play host to North Carolina (12-6) on Sunday, with the time to be determined.Duke (11-7) will play at No. 6 seed Georgetown (12-6) on Sunday. Carolyn Davis and Jess Adams added three goals each Duke.Megan Del Mone had four assists and Emma Hamm added three assists.Dartmouth was led by Greta Meyer with three goals.
