Buchanan throws five-hitter

Freshman right-hander Jake Buchanan tossed a complete-game five-hitter, and Jeremy Synan and Nick Stanley hit three-run home runs on Saturday as the N.C. State baseball team defeated Maryland 12-1 to earn a split of their ACC doubleheader in College Park, Md.

Maryland won the opening game 6-2 behind the eight-hit pitching of Kevin Biringer.

N.C. State is now 34-16 overall and 16-9 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 29-25 and 9-20.

UNC 5, VIRGINIA 2: Rob Wooten struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed only one hit over a career-long 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in the Tar Heels' win over the Cavaliers in Charlottesville, Va. UNC (42-8, 20-5 ACC) held Virginia (33-17, 13-13 ACC) to just hits and struck out 13.

After UNC got a solid start from Adam Warren, Wooten (4-1) came on with runners on second and third with just one out in the fifth inning and fanned Jeremy Farrell and Phil Gosselin on seven pitches to end the threat.

Kyle Shelton homered and tripled, and second baseman Kyle Seager added a double, a triple and scored two runs for UNC.

WAKE FOREST 3, DUKE 1: Charlie Mellies pitched a complete game to lead the Deacons in Winston-Salem.

The Deacons improved to 21-27 overall and 10-15 in the ACC with their fifth straight victory. The Blue Devils dropped to 34-16-1 overall and 8-16-1.

Duke's Christopher Manno (6-1) took his first loss of the season after giving up three runs on three hits over five complete innings.

TULANE 10-10, ECU 8-8: Drew Allian broke an 8-8 tie in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run home run that gave Tulane a win over East Carolina in the second game and a sweep of a doubleheader at Greenville.

The Green Wave improved to 36-15-1 overall and 13-6-1 in Conference USA, while the Pirates dropped to 36-16, 11-10.

BELMONT 7, CAMPBELL 3: The Camels' Brandon Scott fell a home run short of hitting for the cycle, but Belmont took advantage of 11 walks and three errors to defeat Campbell in Nashville, Tenn.

Scott went 3-for-4 with a single, double and a triple.

Campbell fell to 18-33 overall and 11-19 in the Atlantic Sun. Belmont is now 21-29, 15-15.
