Forward Devereaux Peters will miss the rest of the basketball season for 14th-ranked Notre Dame after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee for the second time in nine months.
Peters, who first injured her knee Feb. 10 against Pittsburgh, reinjured the knee on Nov. 23 against Boston College, when she fell to the floor and immediately grabbed her knee. She felt better a few minutes later, though, and played about 12 more minutes in the game the Irish won 102-54.
She underwent an MRI exam last week, and the school announced the results Sunday.
"This is an unfortunate setback for Devereaux, and our primary focus at this point is on her health and well-being," coach Muffet McGraw said.
Peters, a sophomore, started one of the three games she played in this season and was averaging 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds a game. As a freshman, Peters played in 23 games and was fourth on the team in scoring at nine points a game and second in rebounding. She was a key player in Notre Dame's press.
A surgery date has not yet been scheduled. McGraw said Peters will probably seek a medical redshirt, which would give her three more years of athletic eligibility.
