No requests at Triangle schools

Cheer for years, then have your ashes scattered on the field of your favorite sports site.

That's what some die-hard fans want, but officials at UNC, N.C. State and Duke say they don't know of such formal requests from their supporters.

"Holy mackerel," said Larry Gallo, UNC's senior associate athletic director, when told of a 37-year-old Alabama fan willing his ashes to Bryant-Denny Stadium. "But I understand it."

Gallo said he isn't aware of Tar Heel followers submitting requests through the athletic department but is cognizant ashes could have been spread informally anywhere around the campus.

David Horning, senior associate athletic director at N.C. State, said the athletic department hasn't added that to its agenda.

"While we realize a lot of schools [might do that], we have not adopted a formal process," Horning said, adding that it probably has happened informally at various spots.

At Duke, interim athletic director Chris Kennedy also said the athletic department doesn't have an ashes policy.

However, he noted that many requests have come from couples wanting to get married at center court in Cameron Indoor Stadium and from parents asking to stage their children's birthday parties in the storied arena.

Duke does not permit that because, as Kennedy explained, "if you say 'yes' to one, what do you tell everybody else?"
