Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill won the Les Schwab Invitational boys basketball tournament in Hillsboro, Ore., last week in a championship final that featured a pair of Duke recruits.

Kyle Singler, a 6-foot-8 forward at South Medford, Ore., made 16 of 26 shots from the field and scored 39 points in the 99-90 loss to Oak Hill.

Oak Hill's Nolan Smith, a Blue Devils guard recruit, made 12 of 16 shots and scored 30 points.

"I didn't think this would be one of Oak Hill's better teams, but it is beating everyone," said Bob Gibbons, a recruiting expert for All-Star Sports.

"Nolan Smith is playing incredibly well. He reminds me of a young Johnny Dawkins [a current Duke assistant]. If Oak Hill needs a basket, a pass or a steal, Smith delivers."

HEELS TAKE ONE FROM TEXAS: New North Carolina football coach Butch Davis' hometown ties helped the Tar Heels wrest a football commitment away from Texas on Tuesday.

Tight end Zack Pianalto of Springdale, Ark., Davis' hometown, had committed to Texas last spring, but after a whirlwind recruitment plans to enroll at UNC on Jan. 15.

Pianalto (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) missed much of his senior season after breaking his collarbone in the summer and again in the second game of Springdale's season.

He is ranked as a four-star player after helping Springdale to a 14-0 season and a state championship as a junior.

He caught 12 passes for 144 yards in two games as a senior and had 14 passes for 323 yards as a junior.

STATE REPRESENTED AT U.S. ARMY BOWL: North Carolina has three players at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl football all-star game, which is 1 p.m., Saturday in San Antonio. All three are committed to out-of-state schools.

Durham Hillside's Greg Little (6-3, 205), who will play wide receiver in the game, is committed to Notre Dame.

High Point Andrews cornerback Marcus Gilchrist (5-11, 170) is headed to Clemson. Anson County offensive lineman Trinton Sturdivant (6-5, 285) is committed to Georgia.

The game is scheduled to be telecast live by NBC.

TAYLOR SIZZLES: Harnett Central's Lauren Taylor is leading area girls basketball scorers with 26.7 points per game.

She has led the Trojans in scoring the past three seasons and has scored more than 1,200 points in her career.

She also is one of the top softball pitchers in the state and is expected to join the N.C. State softball team as an invited walk-on.

ONE TO WATCH: Reggie Bullock, a 6-5 freshman at Kinston, already is on national recruiting radar.

He doesn't get a lot of playing time because Kinston has one of the deepest, most talented boys basketball teams in the state, but coach Wells Gulledge wouldn't have Bullock on the varsity squad if he couldn't contribute.

"He can be very special," Gulledge said. "He is a gym rat and really works at getting better all the time."

CARY ACADEMY COACHES: Jeff Costa, the boys soccer coach at Cary Academy, will add girls soccer coaching duties in the spring.

Costa completed his first season at Cary Academy last fall. Before going to Cary Academy, he coached the Leesville Road boys to a state 4-A championship in 2004.

Andy Gillis is the new boys lacrosse coach. He was the Chargers' assistant last year.

CARY WRESTLING: Wrestling USA Magazine has Cary ranked fourth in the South region. The Imps are led by 27-0 Joey Farnsworth.
