The Carolina Hurricanes will open the 2008-09 season on Oct. 10 against the Florida Panthers at the RBC Center, the NHL announced Wednesday.

The full regular-season schedule is expected to be released today.

The league also announced the Canes' wild-card partners from the Western Conference, the three teams Carolina will play twice under the NHL's new schedule format: the Anaheim Ducks, Phoenix Coyotes and St. Louis Blues.

OPENING NIGHT

WHEN: Friday, Oct. 10

Under the new format, the Hurricanes will play a total of six games against each Southeast Division team instead of the previous eight to allow for more games against the Western Conference.

The Hurricanes will play two home and two away games against each team in the Eastern Conference, one against each of 12 teams in the Western Conference and two, home and away, against the three wild-card opponents.
