RALEIGH - Mike Commodore walked into a North Raleigh hair salon Thursday looking like Grizzly Adams.
He left looking like G.I. Joe.
The Carolina Hurricanes defenseman had his notorious red mop -- a fixture of the team's Stanley Cup run -- chopped and shaved in front of nearly 100 fans at Generations Salon and Spa at Brierdale Shopping Center.
Commodore became a fan favorite early, partly because of his unruly hair and a much-copied white bathrobe he wore in the locker room.
The haircut brought in nearly $15,000 for pediatric cancer research through the Jimmy V Celebrity Junior Golf Classic. Ten top bidders got to take the first swipes, mostly women who said Commodore was their favorite player.
Courtney Weaver was fourth in line and nervous about it. "I don't want to hurt him," she said, which got a chuckle out of Commodore. Then Renee Jankowsky, Generations' owner, got busy with the shears. She wanted to give him a little style. Short on the sides and the back, perhaps a little tousled on the top. But Commodore likes simplicity. No products. No fuss. Just a No. 1 clipper for a cool 1/8-inch buzz.
And just to rid all evidence of his hairy playoff season, she also shaved his red beard -- one of the fullest on the team -- and shaped up his brows.
It was Commodore's first haircut in North Carolina. He couldn't remember his last trim, but it was before he arrived in Raleigh on Sept. 9. The locks stretched out more than 6 inches, making him look taller than just 6 feet 5.
He plans on getting regular trims through the summer. But once the team starts playing again in the fall, he'll bring the bush back.
