Eye on the Hurricanes

CAROLINA AT DETROIT, 5 P.M. TODAY

WHERE: Joe Louis Arena, Detroit RADIO: WCMC-99.9

CAROLINA

18-year drought in Detroit

This is the Hurricanes' second visit to Detroit since the 2002 Stanley Cup finals. While they won Game 1 of that series at Joe Louis Arena, the Hurricanes haven't won a regular-season game there since Nov. 14, 1989 (0-10-2). ... Mike Commodore (broken finger) is doubtful. ... The Hurricanes play 15 games in December, most of any month this season. ... Dennis Seidenberg has played in 199 NHL games going into tonight.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

GLEN WESLEY, D

By playing in his 1,409th game Saturday, Wesley tied former teammate Paul Coffey for ninth all-time among defensemen. He can pass Coffey tonight and pull within one game of eighth-place Harry Howell. Al MacInnis is next at 1,416. Of those games, 865 have come for the Hartford/Carolina franchise.

DETROIT

Red Wings have NHL's best offense

While the Hurricanes played Saturday night in Montreal, the Red Wings have been off since a 5-0 win over the Minnesota Wild on Friday, their fifth straight thanks to a Henrik Zetterberg hat trick. ... Forwards Kris Draper (back) and Kirk Maltby (knee) are day-to-day. ... Detroit is the NHL's highest-scoring team at 3.36 goals per game going into Saturday's games. Carolina was third (3.14).

DOMINIK HASEK, G

The ageless Hasek, who "retired" after winning the Cup with the Wings in 2002, continues to perform at an elite level at age 43. While he has shared time with Chris Osgood, Hasek has allowed only one goal in the past two games -- facing only 34 shots -- and will get the start today.
