The Fur, Fish & Game Rendezvous offers a twist on traditional summer camps by including shooting, deer biology, taxidermy, trapping and other hunting- and fishing-related activities. Eighty boys and girls ages 12-15 attended this year's July 22-27 session at the Millstone 4-H Center. Here are some of their observations:

ASHLEE McCORMICK

15 - RALEIGH, GRADE 10, ENLOE HIGH SCHOOL

Favorite thing about camp: "I don't have a particular favorite. Most of the stuff I haven't done, so it's new to me. I did like shooting the shotguns."

Least favorite thing about camp: "Getting up so early, like 6:30 a.m. I'm used to getting up at 10 a.m. or noon."

What would you change about camp? "Make some of the boring classes not so boring, where they drone on and on."

DYLAN ROSE

13 - BRYSON CITY, GRADE 7, SWAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Favorite thing about camp: "I've got bunches: fishing, shooting shotguns, swimming and meeting new friends."

Least favorite thing about camp: "Classes are too short, and I want more hands-on classes."

What would you change about camp? "I'd make the classes longer, like an hour and half, and I'd have more free time."

ELIAS HUSKEY

12 - CHEROKEE, GRADE 7, SWAIN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Favorite thing about camp: "Probably fishing or shooting shotguns. I do a lot of fishing for trout and stuff in Cherokee. I like to shoot and plan on getting my [hunting] license soon."

Least favorite thing about camp: "That's pretty hard; bathhouse duty, I guess."

What would you change about camp? "Probably [add] more free time."

KARA REECE

14 - FAYETTEVILLE, GRADE 10, CAPE FEAR HIGH SCHOOL

Favorite thing about camp: "Getting together with a group of friends with a common interest. There's no tension here because everyone shows the same interests."

Least favorite thing about camp: "The classes aren't as hands-on as they could be."

What would you change about camp? "I'd add a class on how to care for wildlife."
