The greater amberjack is known by coastal Tar Heel anglers as a reef donkey for its stubborn fighting habits after being hooked. The fish tend to hunt in schools around reefs and wrecks. The state-record catch weighed 125 pounds and was caught off Cape Lookout in 1973. The world-record fish weighed 155 pounds, 12 ounces and was caught off Bermuda.
