Panthers add LB in Day 2

Carolina makes 'best available' picks

No, the Carolina Panthers aren't switching to a 3-4 defense. But they sure have enough linebackers to do it.

Coming through on a promise to draft who they believed is the best available player, regardless of position, the Panthers on Sunday selected linebacker Dan Connor of Penn State in the third round.

While Carolina addressed its need at free safety by taking Charles Godfrey of Iowa with their earlier third-round pick, Connor gives the Panthers a glut of linebackers.

Even with pressing needs on the defensive line, the Panthers could not pass up Connor, Penn State's career leader with 419 tackles, when he slipped to the 74th spot.

It was part of a busy second day of the draft for the Panthers.

In the fifth round, they took pass-catching tight end Gary Barnidge from Louisville. Carolina finally addressed its defensive line needs in the sixth round when it nabbed defensive tackle Nick Hayden from Wisconsin.

With their three seventh-round choices, the Panthers took UNC defensive end Hilee Taylor, Oregon tackle Geoff Schwartz and guard Mackenzy Bernadeau of Bentley College.

SWAP MEET: NFL decision-makers were a finicky lot at the NFL draft, making a record 33 trades on Saturday and Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 28 from the 2004 draft.

An even dozen trades came in the first two rounds on Saturday.

At one point on Sunday, the New York Jets traded themselves a pick. On Saturday, the Jets traded up to Green Bay's No. 30 spot, giving up their second-rounder and their fourth-rounder, No. 113 overall. On Sunday, the Jets traded with the Packers again, giving Green Bay the 102nd pick to get back No. 113, along with a fifth-round pick.

The Oakland Raiders traded 2005 first-round pick Fabian Washington to the Baltimore Ravens for a fourth-round selection in the draft.

IS IT OVER? Before the second day began at 10 a.m., the NFL distributed ticket forms for fans to fill out. They were collected by NFL reps after the draft ended more than eight and a half hours later. Fans who stayed the whole second day will be able to get tickets to the 2009 draft.

DRUG DEALER ACCUSES LINEMAN: A convicted steroids dealer claims he sold steroids and human growth hormone to NFL offensive lineman Matt Lehr, according to a published report.

David Jacobs also told The Dallas Morning News that Lehr, who played four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before moving on to Atlanta, Tampa Bay and now the New Orleans Saints, used a hair loss prevention drug that can mask steroid use.

Lehr's attorney told The Associated Press on Sunday that the player hasn't used banned substances since he was suspended for four games during the 2006 season while playing for Atlanta, and has passed drug tests.

LEAGUE APPROVES PACMAN TRADE: The NFL approved Tennessee's trade of cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

"I think for Adam's sake it's a very good first step," Jones' agent Manny Arora said. "We still have to get through the NFL commissioner's office. I think once we do that we can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to playing football."

Jones must still be reinstated by commissioner Roger Goodell.
