Many of the best high school boys basketball underclassmen are expected to participate in the Carolina Challenge at Cary Academy on Saturday.

The one-day event is organized by Dave Telep, director of basketball recruiting analysis for Scout.com.

The 80 players will be divided into teams and play in games beginning at 9:30 a.m. There is no charge for admission.

This year's players include Duke commitment Mason Plumlee of Asheville Christ School, North Carolina recruit Reggie Bullock of Kinston and N.C. State sophomore recruit C. J. Leslie of Word of God.

Other players of note are Word of God's Jonathan Wall, Middle Creek's Garrius Adams, Ravenscroft's Ryan Kelly, Panther Creek's Earnest Ross and Enloe's Melvin Tabb.

Among the top players in 2007 were New Hanover's Ty Walker (Wake Forest), Asheville Christ School's Miles Plumlee (Stanford) and Boonville Starmount's Victor Davila (Virginia Tech).

BRITTANY SOCCER: The Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Soccer Showcase will feature 56 high school girls soccer teams Friday and Saturday.

Thirty-six games involving teams from Asheville to the Outer Banks will play at the J. Burt Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.

The event honors a former Wilson Hunt High student who was abducted and killed while returning a graduation gift.

The showcase has grown from 18 teams four years ago into one of the biggest high school events in the state.

Among the area teams involved are Broughton, Millbrook, Panther Creek, Sanderson, Cardinal Gibbons, Cary Academy, East Chapel Hill, West Johnston, North Johnston, Clayton and Franklinton.

Broughton will help open the showcase, playing Charlotte Covenant Day at 5 p.m. Friday.

Complete pairings are available at thebrittany.org.

GENTRY TO NCSU: Leesville Road tight end/linebacker Taylor Gentry has accepted an offer to walk on at N.C. State.

Gentry (6 feet 2, 205 pounds) was a defensive mainstay and had more than 1,000 yards in receptions on a 13-2 team.

He had opportunities at some Division II programs, but he wanted to play on the Division I-A level.
