East Chapel Hill's four freshmen followed their leader.

In the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A Dual Team Tennis Championships, the Wildcats beat Wakefield 9-0.

Senior Tim Bayus won his match at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-4) and then freshmen Sam Weissler, Michael Goldstein, Peter McDonald and Kassim Alani all scratched out wins against Wakefield.

"To start out with a match like this is great," said East Chapel Hill coach Lindsey Linker. "It's a good eye-opener."

In next Tuesday's second round, East Chapel Hill (18-4) will travel to Southern Pines Pinecrest, which beat Garner.

MORE 4-A TENNIS: Green Hope easily handled Scotland County 6-0 in 4-A play.

"We wanted to get a good win behind us and we did that," said coach Andrew Tuttle.

Apex, facing its first Coastal Conference foe, beat Greenville Rose, which entered the match undefeated, 6-0.

"I think with any team that we hadn't seen, there's a little bit of uncertainty there," said Apex coach Ryan Phelps.

Apex hosts Millbrook, which beat Two Rivers conference champion Terry Sanford 5-3. The Wildcats (18-2) were led by junior Tom Orban, who defeated Ryan Anderson at No. 3 singles.

Orban's victory at No. 3 turned the tide for Millbrook as the Wildcats took the rest of the singles and two of the doubles matches.

"Tom Orban's win was huge," said Millbrook coach Chris Grimes, noting that Orban lost the first set. "He was down and fought back."

APEX LAX ADVANCES: Eight different players scored in a 11-3 win over R.J. Reynolds in the first round of the N.C. High School Lacrosse Association 4-A playoffs.

"We've been doing that all year," said Apex coach John Hayden. "We don't have a big scorer."

Apex, a No. 2 seed, will face 10th-seeded Grimsley, which defeated Cary 7-5.

100TH HIT: Landon Adams of Middle Creek led off the Mustangs' 10-0 baseball win over Panther Creek with his 100th career hit, a home run.

Apex has the Tri-Eight 4-A top seed into the playoffs. Fuquay-Varina is No. 2, Athens Drive is No. 3 and Middle Creek is No. 4.

FRESHMAN FANS 15: Carlos Rodon, a freshman, struck out 15 batters and allowed only one hit in 3-0 baseball win over Smithfield-Selma, helping Holly Springs to the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.

THE FINAL SEED: Since Green Hope and Lee County ended the regular season tied in baseball, a one-game playoff game was needed to determine the fifth and final playoff team from the Tri-Eight.

Green Hope scored the winning run in a three-run seventh inning when Grant Shambly was walked giving the Falcons the 6-5 win.

SANDERSON ON TOP: Sanderson won the Cap Seven 4-A baseball top seed Monday with a 3-1 victory over Enloe.

Broughton took the top playoff spot when T.J. Roebuck no-hit Wakefield 10-0.

Sanderson beat Millbrook twice, earning the top seed. Leesville Road advances as the No. 3 seed and Broughton as No. 4.

LADD LEADS PIRATES: Jenn Ladd has led Durham Riverside (17-2; 13-2, PAC Six 4-A) to the league softball championship.

Ladd has 10-0 record with a 0.32 ERA and 119 strikeouts. Also, Pirates pitcher Christie Thomas,is 7-2 with a 1.02 ERA and 83 strikeouts.

SCARBORO SHINES: Wake Forest-Rolesville sophomore pitcher Jordan Scarboro led her team to a 19-0 win over Millbrook.

Scarboro was 4-for-5 at the plate, including a home run, her fourth of the year. She gave up only two hits in the fifth inning, before the game was called.

"She was dominating on the mound from the very beginning," said Cougars assistant Mark Fairchild.
