Heather Beichner of Cardinal Gibbons is among the favorites today in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A track and field championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of N.C. A&T in Greensboro.The 4-A championships will be at the same site Saturday. The 1-A and 3-A championships are set for May 16 and 17.Beichner dominated the 2-A cross country championships last fall, winning by 28 seconds, and she won the 2-A 1,600 meters outdoors in 2007.Burlington Cummings is the two-time defending state 2-A girls champion. North Rowan has won the 2-A boys title four times in the past five years.Southeast Raleigh and New Bern are expected to battle for the 4-A boys championship Saturday.NCHSAA BASEBALL: The N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association and NCHSAA baseball playoffs are scheduled for today and Saturday.Titles were won in 2007 by South Caldwell (4-A), Pikeville Aycock (3-A), East Rutherford (2-A) and Princeton.The NCISAA opening round is scheduled to begin Saturday, although the top four teams in each classification have opening-round byes.NCHSAA SOCCER: East Chapel Hill (21-1-2) is ranked No. 1 in the coaches poll and will be at home against New Hanover (14-4-2).Leesville Road (19-2 and No. 2) faces Fuquay-Varina (15-5-1). Broughton (18-3-1, No. 4) travels to New Bern (16-2-1, No. 9).Apex (17-2-3, No. 5) plays Saturday against Fayetteville Sanford, and Green Hope (17-2-1 and No. 6) plays Lumberton (18-4).Enloe (15-3, No. 11) goes on the road to Southern Pines Pinecrest (19-1-1, No. 8).NCISAA SOCCER: Saint Mary's and Durham Academy are among four NCISAA 3-A girls soccer teams that have first-round playoff byes.The NCISAA playoffs pick up speed next week with quarterfinals Tuesday, semifinals Friday and finals Saturday.NCHSAA GOLF: The NCHSAA golf championship are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.The 4-A site is Pinehurst No. 6; 3-A, Foxfire Resort and Country Club East; 2-A, Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines; and 1-A, Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek.Green Hope is pursuing its third straight 4-A title and its fourth in the past six seasons.NCISAA GOLF: The NCISAA golf championships will be played Monday and Tuesday.The site for 3-A is Bryan Park in Greensboro; 2-A, Bayonet at Puppy Creek in Fayetteville; 1-A, Hyland Hills Golf Club in Pinehurst.BELTLINE COMBINE: More than 200 high school football players are expected Saturday at the Beltline Combine at Enloe High.Registration has been extended.
