Apex edges Broughton, and Fuquay rolls in NCHSAA baseball playoffs

Apex scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night to edge Broughton 5-4 in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association baseball playoffs.

Broughton had taken a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning on a massive home run by Jonathan Redd.

In the seventh, Apex's Derek Carlyle led off with a walk and Corey Thompson singled. The tying and winning runs scored on an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Chris Diaz.

Broughton had taken a 3-0 lead in the first on back-to-back home runs by Kevin Aull and Michael Zeblo.

Apex will play Fayetteville Cape Fear, an 11-10 winner over Scotland.

BRANDT LEADS FUQUAY: Kevin Brandt struck out 12 while allowing three hits in a 5-0 complete-game win over Wilmington Laney. He also had three hits.

Fuquay grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first. Daniel Terry led off for the Bengals with a first-pitch home run.

A walk and singles by Brandt, Travis Bradley and Cameron Conner plated three more runs.

SANDERSON WINS: Garner didn't look like a 9-14 team as it battled Sanderson, the No. 1 seed from the Cap Seven, in a 2-1 baseball loss.

The two teams had three hits each. Eliot Brody had two of Sanderson's three hits.

Sanderson will play Richmond County, a 5-1 winner over Athens Drive, in the second round.

LEESVILLE HOLDS ON: Clayton scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and had two more runners on base, but Leesville Road held on for a 5-4 baseball victory.

Leesville scored all its runs in the fifth.

The Pride next faces Southern Pines Pinecrest, a 4-3 winner over Middle Creek.

JORDAN WINS IN NINE: Durham Jordan scored a run in the ninth inning to beat Hope Mills South View 2-1 in a game that had been suspended Thursday.

The game was stopped in the seventh inning with the score tied 1-1.

The Falcons will play at West Johnston, a 4-2 winner over Green Hope, in the second round.

MILLBROOK WINS: Millbrook, the No. 2 seed from the Cap Seven, advanced to the second round with a 4-3 baseball win over East Chapel Hill.

RIVERSIDE NIPS PINE FOREST: Durham Riverside held Fayetteville Pine Forest to two hits in a 3-2 baseball win.

The Pirates will play Wilmington Ashley, a 2-1 winner over Smithfield-Selma.

NO-HITTER: Rocky Mount's Chris Berry threw a no-hitter in a 9-0 3-A baseball win over Greensboro Dudley.

ECH WINS ON PKS: East Chapel Hill keeper Jackie O'Connor made a stop during the penalty-kick portion of overtime to lift the Wildcats to a 5-4 advantage and 4-A second-round soccer win over New Hanover.

The regulation and overtime periods were scoreless. Taylor Boone, Tessa Carver, Julia Lynds, Elicia Hyde-Deruyscher and Brittany Leadbetter made penalty kicks.

1-A SOCCER: Raleigh Charter defeated Durham Science and Math 2-0 in the second round of the NCHSAA 1-A girls soccer tournament. Camille Morgan had a goal and an assist.

MID-EAST TENNIS: Sam Weissler and Timmy Bayus of East Chapel Hill, Andrew Malizia of Chapel Hill and Jake Bowling of Green Hope earned berths in next week's NCHSAA 4-A tennis championships with quarterfinal wins in the Mid-East 4-A regional. Advancing in doubles are Northern Durham's Pierce Hoover and Adam Flur, Broughton's Jack Parks and J.B. Weaver, Apex's Viking Edeback and Wesley Barrett, and Millbrook's Sean Weber and Jeff Cobb.

Play is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. today at the Optimist Park Courts.

NCCSA: Wake Christian Academy advanced to the finals of the N.C. Christian Schools Association baseball tournament with a 9-5 victory over Winston-Salem Gospel Light. Wake Christian beat Raleigh Christian 7-2 to advance to the girls finals.

NCISAA SOCCER: Cary Academy and Ravenscroft were ousted from the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3-A girls soccer tournament.

Cary Academy lost to First Assembly 4-0, and Charlotte Providence Day beat the Ravens 1-0. Providence Day will play at St. Mary's on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

In the NCISAA 2-A, St. David's defeated Metrolina Christian 4-3 and will play at Cary Christian on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
