Cary Christian won the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A girls soccer championship with a 2-1 victory over Fayetteville Academy on Saturday.

Cary Christian, the No. 1 seed, finished with a 18-1-1 record.

Fayetteville Academy finished 15-3.

Cary Christian's Christa White scored in the opening minutes. Salem Woody pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal with 7:22 left in the game.

"It's always important to get that first goal, no matter whose field you are playing on,'' Cary coach Christian coach Rick Wharton told The Fayetteville Observer. "It was very important to get that goal and set the tempo.''

Fayetteville Academy's Natalie Headley scored 89 seconds left in the game.

"As explosive as their attack is, we weren't comfortable until there was no time left on the clock,'' Wharton said.

LEESVILLE NIPS APEX: Leesville Road's Allison Shiveler scored on a penalty kick with three minutes left in the second 10-minute overtime top lift Leesville to a 3-2 victory over Apex in the N.C. High School Athletic 4-A girls soccer playoff.

The victory over the 2007 4-A state champions sends Leesville to a semifinal showdown with Cap Seven rival Broughton, which defeated East Chapel Hill 3-1 on Friday night.

Leesville beat Broughton in two of three 1-0 meetings this year.

Saturday night, Leesville coach Paul Dinkenor was too happy to escape with the victory at Apex to think much about the upcoming game with Broughton.

"It was a great, great game," Dinkenor said. "We knew that Apex wasn't going to give the game to us and they proved that we were correct."

Shiveler, who has been Leesville top penalty kicker for the past two years, booted the game winner after Faren Frizzell was taken down in the penalty area.

Leesville had taken a 2-0 lead, scoring in the first five minutes of the game and in the first five minutes of the second half.

A 2-0 lead seemed formidable against a club that had allowed only three goals entering the game.

"Apex made a tremendous comeback," Dinkenor said. "You can't say too much about how hard and how well their girls played.

"They earned their goals and seemed to have the momentum going into the overtime period."

Dinkenor said his club settled down in the first overtime.

"We went back to playing soccer," he said. "We started playing a little bit smarter."

NCISAA TRACK: Tyler Ford of Cary Academy and Adrianne Soo of Durham Academy each won two events in the NCISAA 3-A track and field championships Saturday at Forsyth Country Day.

Ford won the triple jump and long jump and was second in the 100 and 200.

Soo doubled with wins in the 3,200 and the 1,600.

Durham Academy won the girls 4x400 and 4x800 relays and the boys 4x800 relay.

Durham Academy finished second behind Charlotte Latin in the girls competiton, 137-98, and was fourth in the boys, behind Latin, Charlotte ProvidenceDya and Forsyth Country Day.

Ravenscroft swept the high jumps with Sarah Beacham and Doug Onuscheck. The Ravens' Taylor Warren won the 300 hurdles

Devin Drewry of Durham Academy was the easy winner in the 800 and teammate Fred Ward won the 3,200.

North Raleigh Christian's Kyle Young won the pole vault.

COMMUNITY WINS: Community Christian of Wilson, the No. 8 and last seed in the NCISAA 1-A girls soccer tournament, completed its unlikely playoff run with a 2-1 victory over Faith Christian in a game that went to penalty kicks.

Community (13-3) upset top-seeded Trinity Academy of Raleigh 2-1 in the first round in overtime. Community then beat Gaston Day 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals.

KLEMAN LEADS APEX: Natalie Kleman hit a grand slam and pitchd a five-hitter in leading Apex to an 8-1 girls softball victory over Wake Forest-Rolesville.

SANDERSON BLANKS JORDAN: Sanderson, the top seed from the Cap Seven 4-A, shut out Durham Jordan 3-0 on two hits. Wigmore and Brody each had two hits for the Spartans.

COUGARS FALL IN 10: Wilmington Hoggard rallied late in regulation to tie Apex and eventually defeated the Cougars 9-8 in 10 innings in the third round of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs. Evan Oliver had a two-run homer in the loss.
