Wilson Day made a two-inch tap in for a birdie Monday on the first playoff hole to win a berth in the 2008 Junior Amateur Championship.

Day, 16, is a rising sophomore at Ravenscroft.

He shot rounds of 73-72 at Manakin-Sabot (Va.) Hermitage Country Club's 6,901-yard Manakin course to share the lead after regulation.

He had a one-stroke lead on the last hole of regulation, but had a bogey, which dropped him into a tie with Evan Beck of Virginia Beach at 1-over-par 145 for the day.

On the first playoff hole, Day hit his first hole into the left rough and used a six-iron punch out 60 yards from the pin.

His third shot was spectacular. He hit a 58-degree lob wedge to within two inches from the cup.

"I was able to refocus after the final hole in regulation and realize I still could win," Day said.

Only the winner of the tournament earned an invitation to the U.S. Junior Am, which will be played July 21-26 at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala.
