Caps runners come in third

Broughton's Jones finishes 13th at Richmond cross country meet

The Broughton boys finished third on Saturday in the McDonald's Cross Country Festival in Richmond, Va.

The meet attracted 55 teams, including several with outstanding credentials.

The Caps were led by Reidy Jones, who had a time of 16 minutes, 43 seconds to finish 13th overall. Burk Staub was 16th with a 16:46.

Broughton finished ahead of rival Green Hope, which finished 11th. Douglas Black was 21st (16:52) and Zak Roshdy was 50th (17:33).

In the girls competition, Sarah Rapp (20:16) helped Cardinal Gibbons finish 17th with her No. 40 finish.

"It was great competition," Gibbons coach Benny Morgan said. "We could have done a little better, but our average time was better than it was two years ago when we ran up there.

"That was one of our goals, so we were happy with that."

Gibbons ran two teams, and its second girls squad was third in the private school race.

GILLAND WINS IN GREENSBORO: Chapel Hill senior Taylor Gilland, a two-time N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A champion, won the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational at Hagan Stone Park on Saturday.

The meet drew more than 75 high school teams.

Gilland ran a 15:33 to win by more than 20 seconds and lead the Tigers to the team victory over Northwest Guilford, 100-139.

West Johnston's Dakota Peachtree was fifth, in 16:09.

The Chapel Hill girls took their championship with a 91-98 win over Northwest Guilford. Chapel Hill's Ahna Weeks was eighth overall.

The top area girls finishers included runner-up Lauren Strapp of Leesville Road (19:29) and Maraya Slatter of West Johnston, who finished third (19:33).

WOODBURN NOTCHES 100TH: Josh Woodburn of Franklinton scored his 100th career goal in the first minutes of a 12-0 boys soccer victory over Granville Central on Monday.

Woodburn took a pass on the right side and fired a hard shot into the left side with about six minutes gone in the lopsided win.

He added three more goals to give him 103 in his career and 28 this season.

He leads the area in scoring with 66 points.

Woodburn scored 12 goals as a freshman, 26 as a sophomore and 37 in 2007. He surpassed the Franklinton scoring record of 67 career goals last season.

"Josh has a nose for the goal," Franklinton coach Deran Coe said. "He is big -- 6 feet 4 -- and quick, and he has great vision on the field.

"He is an unselfish player, but he isn't afraid to take a shot."
