Ravens win twice in one day

Girls team plays in two tournaments

The Ravenscroft girls basketball team won two games Monday, finishing third in the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational in the morning and winning their first-round game in the Cardinal Gibbons Invitational at night.

The Ravens defeated Enloe 78-60 to claim third in the Glaxo as Erin Bratcher scored 28 points. Lindsay Cowher had 11 points and 16 rebounds.

Cowher scored 18 points in a 51-36 victory over Cardinal Gibbons in the first round of the Gibbons tournament.

Ravenscroft will play East Chapel Hill, a 58-49 winner over Raleigh Word of God, tonight at 8.

N.C. High School Athletic Association teams cannot play two games in a day, but Ravenscroft is in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association.

"This was a first for me," veteran Ravens coach Ned Gonet said, referring to playing in two games in two tournaments in the same day. "I was concerned with the travel, of course, but our girls rallied and played well.

"We beat two good opponents."

FUQUAY-VARINA GIRLS WIN: Camise Patterson scored 13 points as Fuquay-Varina girls defeated Charlotte Latin 55-38 in the Johnson-Lambe Girls Invitational at Cary Academy.

The Bengals will play in the second round against Western Harnett, which beat Durham Academy 69-32.

Dakota Dukes scored 14 points to help Cary Academy to a 53-49 victory over Cary Christian in another first-round game.

Cary Academy will play Southern Durham, a 66-32 winner over Panther Creek.

CLAYTON GIRLS HIT 100: Ten players scored for Clayton's girls team as the Comets beat Lee County 100-47.

Clayton plays Overhills today in a round-robin event.

JORDAN GIRLS THIRD: Durham Jordan defeated Orange 55-38 to finish third in the eight-team Holiday Hoopla at Eastern Alamance. Kristen Lyon had 14 points and seven assists.

WF-R GIRLS TOP JAGS: Wake Forest-Rolesville's Rena Wakama made an acrobatic layup with 23 seconds left to give the Cougars a 44-42 win over Athens Drive.

Wilmington Hoggard defeated Southeast Raleigh 64-58 in other game in the Athens tournament.

GARNER BOYS LOSE SQUEAKER: The Garner boys lost their second close game in the Lee County tournament, losing to Hoke County 62-61, despite 24 points by Josh Brooks.

The Trojans lost to Sanderson 68-66 in the first round.

ST. DAVID'S TOPS FUQUAY-VARINA: Gabe Rooth scored 23 points and St. David's handled Fuquay-Varina 72-54 in the first round of the Johnson-Lambe Boys Invitational at Cary Academy.

Fuquay-Varina will play in the second round against Wilson Greenfield, an 82-50 winner over Western Harnett.

Durham Carolina Friends defeated Cary Academy 71-66.

Carolina Friends will play the winner of the game between Cary Christian and Carolina Prep.

JORDAN TOPS ORANGE: Durham Jordan used it balance to top Orange 79-60 in one of the three games in the Spartan Challenge at Southern Durham.

ATHENS DRIVE WINS IN OT: Athens Drive's boys defeated Broughton 65-60 in overtime as Josh Davis scored 25 points during the Cap Seven-Tri-Eight Challenge at Green Hope.

Wake Forest-Rolesville defeated Green Hope 44-34 in the second game.

WAKEFIELD IN FINAL: Wakefield defeated Richmond County 56-42 to advance to the Holiday in the Pines Christmas tournament final at Southern Pines Pinecrest.

Wakefield will play Pinecrest, a 74-64 winner over Fayetteville Trinity, at 7:30 for the title.

Holly Springs defeated West Montgomery 79-49 and will play at 3:30 against Overhills, a 66-44 winner over Durham Academy,
