RALEIGH - The weather wasn't the only thing that hampered Millbrook's homecoming festivities on Friday night.

Playing most of the game in a driving rainstorm, Sanderson defeated the host Wildcats 19-7.

The Spartans (3-4, 2-0 in the Cap Seven) dominated on the ground with Travis Rogers running for 141 yards and a touchdown.

"We knew that the weather was going to create a slugfest," said Sanderson coach Jason Tindal, whose club broke a four-game losing streak with a 16-12 win over Wakefield on Sept. 22. "We played like a tough, hard-nosed team and took it to them."

Sanderson took the lead late in the first half, putting together an eight-play, 65-yard touchdown drive, capped by Ben Feldman's 2-yard run.

In the second half, Millbrook (2-6, 1-2) fought back and put together a five-play, 39-yard touchdown drive of their own.

Hayden Maples connected with Cleo Cooper on a 10-yard pass completion to tie the score at 6. Montrelle Harris' extra point gave Millbrook a 7-6 lead with 7:22 to play in the third quarter.

On Sanderson's next possession, the Spartans drove down the field for the winning points with Feldman scoring his second touchdown of the night on a 7-yard run. The 2-point conversion attempt was stopped, and Sanderson led 12-7 with 3:54 remaining in the third quarter.

Travis Rogers added a late four- yard touchdown run with 55 seconds left to seal the win.

Millbrook coach Clarence Inscore, whose club knocked off Wakefield 12-10 last week, said his team had no excuses.

"We had a bad week of practice and if you practice badly, you play badly," Inscore said. "Sanderson just plain beat us."

Rogers entered the game averaging 59.7 yards per game but helped the Spartans run for 279 yards.

The key to the victory, however, may have been the Sanderson defense that held the Wildcats to 101 yards on the ground.

Millbrook's Brandon Beatty ran for 95 yards.
