RALEIGH - Leesville Road celebrated a combined homecoming and senior night with what was believed to be its first varsity football victory over Millbrook, 28-3, on Friday night.

Afterward, Leesville Road coach David Green pointed out the championship banners hanging on the stadium wall to his team.

"I wanted to remind them," the second-year coach said. "When I got here, I gathered up the players and pointed to the banners. I told them, 'There's a lot of banners ... but none for football. We're going to put one up.' "

The Pride (8-1 overall, 5-0 Conference) is poised to win its first Cap Seven football conference title.

Millbrook (2-7, 1-3), unaccustomed to a losing season, looks to regroup.

"We're struggling right now. We're not able to make the routine plays," Wildcats coach Clarence Inscore said.

Leesville Road quarterback Thomas Wilson threw for three touchdowns in the first half, including two to Taylor Gentry, and running back Pete Mangum rushed for 164 yards as the Pride took advantage of excellent field position and five Millbrook turnovers.

Leesville's average starting position was the Millbrook 48-yard line, and the Pride scored 21 points off Wildcats turnovers.

With Leesville Road up 14-0 in the second quarter, the Pride's Bayani Jones became a one-man team. First, Jones picked off Hayden Maples at the Millbrook 31. Then, on the first play after the change of possession, Jones caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Wilson. Jones capped it by kicking the extra point for the 21-0 lead.

Millbrook's defense did intercept Wilson three times and recovered a fumble, but Eric Carstens' 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first half was its only gain from the takeaways.
