Cary wrestlers face road test

Imps ready for state dual-team event

Story Tools

WHAT IS DUAL-TEAM COMPETITION?

The team score is all that matters.

Wrestlers compete individually in their respective weight classes, but only to earn points for their teams.

Next week, area wrestlers will compete in the individual championships in which the winner of each match will advance.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association state dual-team wrestling tournament begins tonight at 28 sites across the state.

The first two rounds of the whirlwind tournament will be tonight, followed by two rounds Thursday and championships on Saturday.

Cary is the overwhelming favorite in the 4-A dual-team, although the Imps go on the road tonight for the first and second rounds.

The undefeated Imps will wrestle host Fayetteville Britt in the first round. Immediately after that match, the winner will take on the winner of the first-round match between Wilmington Laney and Hope Mills South View.

The same format will be followed at each site: two first- and second-round matches held simultaneously at 6 p.m., with the winners immediately going to second-round matches.

Sanderson and Chapel Hill also are host schools for first-round matches. Site selection for opening rounds is based on availability and geography. Generally, the NCHSAA tries to put matches at sites that minimize travel.

RICHMOND CONSISTENT: Southern Lee junior Akeem Richmond has scored 20 or more points in 15 of 19 games this basketball season.

He is averaging 24.8 points with a high of 36 in a season-opening victory over Garner. His season low is nine points against Garner and Lee County.

He has scored in the 30s four times and in the 20s 11 times.

Hunter McClintock of Northern Durham leads the area with 28.3 points per game.

A senior guard, he has scored 40 or more points in two of his past three games. He has had a high of 44 and has been in the 30s seven times. His season low is 11 points against East Chapel Hill.

SWIMMING FINALS: The NCHSAA 3-A and 4-A swimming championships are scheduled for Saturday.

The 4-A diving is Friday at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium, and the swimming finals will be at the same site on Saturday.

The 3-A diving is scheduled for Friday at N.C. State's Casey Natatorium with the swimming finals at the same site on Saturday.

INDOOR TRACK: The NCHSAA indoor track and field championships are Saturday in Chapel Hill.

There will be one competition for 4-A schools and another for 3-A, 2-A and 1-A teams. Both championships will be held at UNC's Eddie Smith Fieldhouse.
