Green Hope senior Nicole Danford has been voted the Gatorade North Carolina girls soccer player of the year.A 5-foot-4 senior midfielder, Danford scored 16 goals and had sevens assists for the 16-3-1 Falcons.The UNC-Greensboro recruit also is a member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Region III team.WALL RANKED NO. 1: Jonathan Wall of Raleigh Word of God is the top-ranked boys basketball player in the country in the new Rivals.com list of the top 100 in the class of 2009.The 6-foot-4 point guard is one of the quickest players in the country and has gained a national reputation as a playmaker. He often dashes through defenders to score near the rim. He is No. 8 on the Scout.com rankings.KELLY INVITED: Ryan Kelly, a 6-9 junior forward at Ravenscroft, has been invited to the USA Basketball Men's under-18 national team tryouts in July.Kelly averaged 23.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks for Ravenscroft. Rivals.com ranks him No. 44 on its top 100 list for the class of 2009.USA Basketball is in the midst of the selection process for tryouts and has not announced a complete list of players.The U18 national team will play in the July 11-18 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men.HICKS TO CHOWAN: Zach Hicks, a 6-10 center at Wake Christian Academy, has signed to play basketball at Chowan University. He averaged 16 points and nine rebounds for Wake Christian.FRIENDS WILL BE FOES: South Granville seniors Jeff May and Pratt Maynard were born hours apart at the same hospital and have been lifelong friends.Both were chosen to the N.C. Baseball Coaches Association all-state team in 2007.Next year, they will be on competing teams. May has committed to North Carolina, Maynard to N.C.
