KELLY INVITED: Ryan Kelly, a 6-9 junior forward at Ravenscroft, has been invited to the USA Basketball Men's under-18 national team tryouts in July.

Kelly averaged 23.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks for Ravenscroft. Rivals.com ranks him No. 44 on its top 100 list for the class of 2009.

USA Basketball is in the midst of the selection process for tryouts and has not announced a complete list of players.

The U18 national team will play in the July 11-18 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men.

HICKS TO CHOWAN: Zach Hicks, a 6-10 center at Wake Christian Academy, has signed to play basketball at Chowan University. He averaged 16 points and nine rebounds for Wake Christian.

FRIENDS WILL BE FOES: South Granville seniors Jeff May and Pratt Maynard were born hours apart at the same hospital and have been lifelong friends.

Both were chosen to the N.C. Baseball Coaches Association all-state team in 2007.

Next year, they will be on competing teams. May has committed to North Carolina, Maynard to N.C. State.

The Vikings play at Wilson Fike tonight in the third round of the state playoffs.

NORTHERN BASKETBALL: Matt Hunt, boys basketball coach at Northern Durham, has resigned, citing personal/family reasons.

Northern now is in the process of accepting applications.
