Ravenscroft beat top-seeded North Raleigh Christian Academy 6-4 in the first game of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3-A softball semifinals Friday.

Ravenscroft sophomore Heather Glenn was credited with the win.

She was also a potent part of the batting order, behind seniors Melissa Wohler and Kendra Kempf in the 3, 4 and 5 spots respectively. All three of the girls batted 3-for-4 in the game.

"They've been three ladies I can count on all year," Ravenscroft coach Chip Hoggard said.

Kempf doubled in a pair of runs in the fifth, breaking a 2-2 stalemate, said Hoggard.

"She had a lot to do with it," Hoggard said of Kempf.

The other game in the double-elimination tournament -- between Hickory Grove and Providence Day -- was rained out at North Raleigh Christian.

That game is scheduled to be played at 11 a.m. Ravenscroft will get the winner in a game tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m.

GETTING A KICK: Both 3-A soccer semifinals didn't end easily.

Durham Academy beat St. Mary's 3-1 on penalty kicks, after a stalemate in overtime at Greensboro Day.

Charlotte Latin edged Greensboro Day 3-2, also on penalty kicks.

Durham Academy will face Charlotte Latin today at 1 p.m. for the title.

CARY ACADEMY ONE STEP AWAY: Cary Academy will shoot for a boys state tennis championship today in its match against Charlotte Country Day at 10 a.m.

Cary is the top-seeded team in the 3-A tournament and beat Country Day 7-2 in April. But Country Day has won the title the last two years, eliminating Cary Academy in the semifinals both times.

In the semifinals, Cary Academy beat Forsyth Country Day 6-3 on Friday.
