Cardinal Gibbons made boys high school tennis history Saturday at the Cary Tennis Center when Will Rollinson successfully defended his 2007 singles championship and teammates Ryan Daly and Jonathan Fedorkowicz also repeated in doubles.The back-to-back sweeps of singles and doubles by the same players is believed to be unprecedented in the N.C. High School Athletic Association history."It was quite a day," Gibbons coach Barbara Gamblin said.Gibbons dominated the 2-A championship about as thoroughly as possible.Rollinson, an N.C. State recruit, defeated teammate Michael Reilly 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to win his third straight singles title.Daly, an East Carolina recruit, and Fedorkowicz beat William Gray and Taylor Sullivan of Kill Devil Hills First Flight, 6-2, 6-3.It was almost a Gibbons intrasquad match in the championships.Gibbons' other doubles team, freshman Chris Geaslen and junior Chris Betz, lost to Gray and Sullivan in the semifinals 6-4, 7-6 (5)."We were hoping to get all of them to the finals," Gamblin said.Gibbons also is a heavy favorite to win the NCHSAA 2-A dual-team tournament, which continues next week.In dual-team tennis, teams advance rather than just individual winners.Gibbons is 23-0. Among its victories is a win over East Chapel Hill, which will play Broughton next week in the 4-A quarterfinals.MALIZIA FALLS IN 4-A FINALS: Chapel Hill High's Andrew Malizia reached the 4-A finals at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, but lost to Ryan Noble of Fayetteville Terry Sanford, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1.Noble had defeated Green Hope's Jake Bowling in his morning semifinal, 6-0, 6-2.In doubles, Greensboro Grimsley's Connor Sherwood and Jon Roy defeated Fayetteville Sanford's Andrew Bock and Ryan Anderson 6-1, 6-2.Sherwood and Roy beat Apex's Viking Edeback and Wesley Barrett in a morning semifinal 6-2, 7-6 (3).CARY ACADEMY WINS: Cary Academy nipped Charlotte Country Day 5-4 to win the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3-A title.The NCISAA uses dual-team scoring in 3-A, where team scores determine the winner.In 2-A and 1-A, the NCISAA has flighted individual winners with teams receiving points for individuals' advancement.Cary Academy's Taylor Meyer, James Atkinson and Zach Snarnoff were named to the 3-A all-state team. They play Nos. 1, 2 and 3 singles.Cary Academy won Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 6 singles, plus Nos. 1 and 2 doubles to take the win over Charlotte Country Day.ST. DAVID'S SECOND: St. David's finished second in the NCISAA 2-A tennis tournament at Cape Fear Academy in Wilmington.Cape Fear nipped St. David's 28-26 for the team title.St. David's Owen Stone and Torre McLain were the state singles champions at Nos. 2 and 3.Stone and Will Suk were the No. 1 doubles winners.STATESVILLE ROLLS: Statesville Christian won all six singles and all three doubles titles to dominate the NCISAA 1-A tennis finals.Statesville Christian rolled up 36 points to top Wilson Greenfield's 17.WRIGHT WINS SINGLES: Jacob Wright of Asheville Roberson won the NCHSAA 3-A singles title at the Burlington Tennis Center.Wright defeated Hickory freshman Luke Synn of Hickory 6-0, 7-6 (3) in the championship match.Luke Gillis and Tripp Hawkins of Statesville took the doubles title, beating Southeast Guilford's Travis Sandman and Evan Hurley 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.HARRISON WINS IN UPSET: West Montgomery's Grant Harrison, last weekend's regional runner-up, won the NCHSAA 1-A singles championship at the Cary Tennis Center.Harrison defeated Akash Dadlani of Albemarle, the West regional champ, 6-3, 6-3.Last year's singles champ, Tyler Grove of Hendersonville, played doubles this year and teamed with Robert Beal to beat Nickolus John and Dusty Roberson of Mount Airy 6-2, 6-3, for the doubles crown.
