DURHAM -
One future Duke Blue Devil took his team's final shot Tuesday night in the Hoophall Classic at Cameron Indoor Stadium. His future teammate did not get that opportunity. When Oak Hill (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) guard Nolan Smith missed the second of two free throws with 15 seconds left, it set up a potential game-tying shot for Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) forward Taylor King. The 6-foot-8 King, who had already made six 3-pointers, was the obvious choice to attempt a score-tying shot. Instead, the Monarch's Blake Arnet launched a 3-pointer that fell short as time expired and Oak Hill (27-1) escaped with a 77-74 winSmith, who scored 14 points, was one of four Warriors in double figures. Alex Legion and Howard Thompkins finished with 17 apiece. Brandon Jennings added 13.Julian Vaughn pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for the Warriors, who are ranked third nationally."We're happy to win; I'll put it that way," Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said. "I didn't feel like we took care of the ball and did the things we should have done the last four or five minutes."King scored 20 of his 32 points in the first half to lead Mater Dei. His fifth 3-pointer knotted the score at 54. The Monarchs, though, trailed by four points entering the final stanza."We should have gone for the last shot," Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight said of the final moments of the third quarter. "We hurried the shot, and they scored, and then, they scored, again."Mater Dei, despite committing just 13 turnovers, was stymied by a 50 percent (8-for-16) effort at the free-throw line, including zero attempts by King.Andy Brown and Travis Wear scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Kamyron Brown and David Wear had nine each for the sixth-ranked Monarchs.
