Dwight Jones, one of the top high school football wide receivers in the country two years ago at Burlington Cummings High, probably will commit to a Division II school within the next few days.

Jay Perdue, the Cummings athletics director, said Jones has heard from Fayetteville State, Valdosta State, Shaw and Catawba within the past week.

Jones, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound receiver, originally signed with North Carolina but needed academic work.

He played at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave Military last fall, but returned home after the first semester and planned to take online courses.

"Right now, it appears that he isn't going to have the academic work he needs to go to Carolina," Perdue said.

"He talked with the Carolina coaches, and I think everyone agrees that it is best for Dwight to look at some other options."

Perdue said NFL scouts can find players on the Division II level if the player is good enough.

"Look at the players in the NFL," Perdue said. "There are lots of guys from smaller schools.

"The big thing for Dwight now is to get back on the field."

Jones caught 67 passes for 1,396 yards and 12 touchdowns during his senior season.

He was The Associated Press' basketball player of the year in 2007 after averaging 25.6 points and 13 rebounds per game.

DEACS LAND GUARD: Wake Forest received a commitment from 6-foot-2 basketball guard C.J. Harris of Winston-Salem Mount Tabor recently. He is the first commitment for Deacons coach Dino Gaudio in the class of 2009.

Harris was a versatile guard for Mount Tabor last season. The Spartans went 26-4, with Harris averaging 19.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 4.5 steals.

"We use three guards and let any of them bring it up," Mount Tabor coach Andy Muse said. "But by his sophomore year at Wake Forest, I think C.J. is going to be a strong point guard."

Harris is playing the point for Chris Paul's CP3 club team this summer. In his last four games, he has averaged 24 points and six assists.

He has been recruited by Virginia Tech, Clemson, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia and Stanford. Scout.com has him rated as a four-star prospect on a five-star scale.

Harris also is a member of the National Honor Society.

PACK GETS RECRUIT FOR 2010: N.C. State recently received a commitment from basketball guard Ryan Harrow, who averaged 16 points per game last season at Concord Cannon School.

The 5-11 junior is expected to play at Marietta (Ga.) Walton for the 2008-09 season.

"They got a gem before people realize he's a gem," Walton coach Joe Goydish said. "I think he could be a top-25 kid [in his class]."

Harrow plays club basketball with N.C. State guard target 6-4 Lorenzo Brown of Roswell (Ga.) Centennial.

State already has a commitment from Raleigh Word of God forward C.J. Leslie in the class of 2010.

KELLY MAKES U18 TEAM: Ryan Kelly, a 6-10 rising senior at Ravenscroft, has earned a berth on the USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team.

Kelly is one of 12 players who will represent the U.S. in the FIBA Americas Men's U18 Championship in Formosa, Argentina, this week. The eight-team tournament features national teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean.

The top four teams qualify for the 2009 FIBA U19 Men's World Championship that will be held July 2-12, 2009, in New Zealand.

Kelly averaged 23.7 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.7 blocks last season and is No. 13 on the scout.com recruiting site's top 100 list.

He has narrowed his list of schools to North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Stanford, N.C. State and Davidson.
